Redesigning AI by Daron Acemoglu

The book “Redesigning AI” is written by Daron Acemoglu. It was published on May 25, 2021. Humans are unlikely to be rendered obsolete by artificial intelligence (AI). It is also unlikely to produce superintelligence shortly. However, in the next two decades, technology will make enormous strides, revolutionizing medicine, entertainment, and transportation, transforming employment and markets, and substantially increasing the quantity of information available to governments and businesses about individuals.

Daron Acemoglu, an economist, and best-selling book kicks off AI for Good by arguing that these developments are cause for alarm. Today’s AI research focuses too much on the technological challenges ahead, rather than the disruptive consequences on society’s fabric: displacing employees while failing to provide new possibilities for them, and threatening to undermine the democratic government.

However, the course of AI development is not set in stone. Acemoglu contends that it can boost democratic liberties while also creating shared wealth. However, guiding it toward that goal will take considerable effort: it will need new financing and regulation, as well as new norms and objectives for developers and rules governing new technologies and their uses.

This book will bring together experts – economists, legal scholars, policymakers, and developers – at the intersection of technology and economic justice to debate these challenges and consider what steps tech companies can take to ensure that the advancement of AI does not further weaken the economic prospects of the most vulnerable groups of the population.
